PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Old Orchard Beach Surge defeated the Plattsburgh Redbirds in double header action today to remain 1 game ahead of the Islanders who are creeping up in the standings.
In Game one, James Simpson led the way offensively with a 4 for 4 performance. Kevin Putkonen added 2 hits with one being a double and driving in 2 RBI’s. Eric Mozeika was the starter and tossed 6 innings allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 6 batters.
The RedBirds had 7 hits and scored 3 runs which wasn’t enough to defeat the red hot Surge. Scott Hall was not himself as he allowed 9 runs on 10 hits.
In Game 2, the Surge defeated the Redbirds 3-2 on what was a great come from behind victory against a very good RedBirds starter, Wendell Floranus. Both teams had a total of 4 hits. A game tying RBI triple by Edgar Lebron was the difference in the game as that led to a go ahead ground out to score Lebron and to take the lead for the Surge.
Floranus pitched a complete game giving up just 4 hits while striking out 7 batters and only walking 1. A performance that would normally end in a victory for the RedBirds ended in a loss in which Jalen Miller earned after tossing 6 innings allowing just 1 earned run and striking out 5 batters for the Surge.
The Surge are now in first place overall by 1 game which means if the Surge win the second half, the Surge will have home field advantage in the playoffs.
