SARANAC LAKE, NY – Theres no place like home for the Saranac Lake Surge who after losing 7 straight road games take the series from the red hot Road City Explorers. Out of the 6 game series, the Surge would take the last 5 games after being downed in the season opener.
Saranac Lake has quickly been labeled the best fans by the Empire League as the season opener brought in over 500 fans and over 100 on average per game. The fans were the real MVPs of the first series as they cheered on the Surge to a 5 game winning streak putting them in the hunt for the playoffs.
During those 5 games, the Surge Ace Ricky Schafer, and newcomer 6 foot 9 inch Austin Steinfort got complete game wins. Japanese pitcher Chikara Igami would take a victory tossing 6 innings as well. Alexander Lafayette belted the first ever professional Home Run in Saranac Lake history in the first game of the season.
The Surge improved their record to (8-9) overall and are in second place behind the rivals Plattsburgh Thunderbirds. However the team just needs to finish in the top 4 overall to enter the playoffs if they do not win the North Country Division.
It was home opening series to remember in Saranac Lake and the team will return to play at home on July 16th as they face the 1st place Puerto Rico Islanders of the South Caribe Series.
