The Old Orchard Beach Surge (4-2) defeated the New Hampshire Wild (0-5) with a final score of 3-0 on Wednesday night at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach.
The Surge took a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. Dan Gagnon started the inning with a leadoff single, reaching 2nd on an error. A Chris Ray single moved Gagnon to 3rd. He scored on a passed ball. A Wild error allowed Ray to score.
Rich Baerga took over the mound for starter Alan Carey in the 2nd due to injury. Carey ended the night with 1.2 innings pitched, striking out 2 and allowing 1 hit.
The Surge scored their 3rd and final run of the game in the 4th. Catcher Jordyn Van Atta knocked a leadoff double, stealing 3rd. An error allowed him to score.
The Surge bullpen was lights-out. Baerga, Christian Telemaco, Cody Frank, and closer Joshua Martinez combined for 2 hits, 3 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Baerga earned his first win of the season; Martinez picked up his first save.
The Surge offense was led by third baseman Dan Gagnon, who had 2 of the 5 Surge hits. First baseman Chris Allen also collected his league-leading 6th stolen base of the season.
The Surge return to action Thursday night, June 9th, at 6:30pm for game 2 of their 5-game series with the visiting Wild. Right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hall will be making his second on the mound for the Surge.
