The Old Orchard Beach Surge (5-3) defeated the visiting New Hampshire Wild (1-6) with a final score of 14-11 on Friday night at The Ballpark.
The Wild took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. Shortstop Richard Colla had a leadoff triple, reaching home on a sac fly from designated hitter Joshua Wong. The Surge battled back, taking a 2-run lead in the 1st. Infielder Chris Allen knocked an RBI double, while Joshua Martinez knocked a 2-run double.
The Wild collected a run in the 3rd off an error, bringing the score to 3-2.
Allen reached base in the 3rd on a leadoff single, reaching 2nd on his league-leading 7th steal of the season. He would score on an error. Martinez would collect his 3rd RBI of the game with a sac hit. Catcher Jordyn Van Atta also scored, giving the Surge a 6-2 lead.
The Wild tied the game 6-6 in the 4th. Outfielder Tyler Caserta collected an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Second baseman Chris Jacobs also knocked a 3-run homerun, his 3rd in 2 games.
Left-handed pitcher Michael Romano took over the mound, ending the night for starter Emil Flaquer. Flaquer allowed 5 hits while walking 4 and striking out 3.
The Wild took a 7-6 lead in the 5th, with catcher Ken Matsuzaka hitting a solo homerun.
The Surge offense would come alive in the 5th, scoring 7 runs to take a 13-7 lead. Luc Pomales began the inning with a leadoff single. Back to back walks would load up the bases. Chris Ray tied the game with a sac hit. A bases loaded walk would give the Surge an 8-7 lead. Errors would allow 3 more Surge runners to score. A 2-run double from Brandon Cooksey would end the scoring for the inning.
The Wild looked to rally back in the 7th, collecting 3 runs, including a 2-run triple for Colla.
David Ernst would take over the mound, ending the night for Romano. Romano collected his first win of the season, allowing 9 hits, walking 0 and striking out 1.
A Chris Allen RBI single in the 7th would give the Surge a 14-10 lead. The Wild would add 1 last run in the 8th, with an RBI single from Matsuzaka.
The Surge were outhit by the Wild 15-8, but the 6 Wild errors and heads-up Surge base running would be the deciding factor in the final score. Chris Allen led the team with 3 hits.
The Surge take on the Wild tomorrow night, June 11th, at 6:30pm for game 4 of their 5 game series. Right-handed pitcher Benny Collesano will be starting on the mound.
